Airport Authority Issues Annual Sustainability Report

Thursday, June 29, 2017

SAN DIEGO – June 29, 2017 – The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority’s Sustainability Report is now available at sustain.san.org.

This report generally highlights the Airport Authority’s activities and accomplishments for calendar year 2016. As before, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has guided the development of this report.

The Sustainability Report, produced annually, serves as a useful barometer for San Diego International Airport’s relationship to the environment, the traveling public, its stakeholders and the greater San Diego community.

“In the final analysis, we don't operate in a vacuum,” said Kimberly J. Becker, SAN’s President/CEO. “We move large numbers of people and products and, in doing so, have become one of the foremost economic drivers in San Diego County, generating approximately $10 billion in annual economic impact.”

SAN has defined sustainability as “building an enduring and resilient enterprise by effectively managing our financial, social and environmental risks, obligations and opportunities.”

That definition is founded on the concept of a “triple bottom line” using financial, social and environmental yardsticks.

Financial: Although all three metrics are vitally important to carrying out the Airport Authority’s sustainability mission, the financial strategy serves as the bedrock. The Airport Authority is committed to a financial strategy that is flexible, nimble and able to proactively address future changes in the aviation industry and in the overall economy.

Social: The “social” part of the sustainability strategy has two components, the first being a commitment to ensuring the highest level of employee commitment and performance; and the second being more externally focused on the community and acting as a good neighbor and responsive regional agency.

Environment: San Diego International Airport occupies 661 acres of sensitive waterfront property. In addition, the airport is a major consumer of water and energy. The extent to which it can preserve and protect the immediate environment while conserving scarce natural resources will ultimately define the airport’s success as a sustainable enterprise.

“The triple bottom line helps guide us in our efforts to provide a smooth, efficient and sustainable airport experience for the traveling public, while balancing the need to be a good steward of the environment and a responsible community partner,” said Brendan Reed, the airport’s Director of Planning and Environmental Affairs.

Examples of topics covered in the report include:

The Airport Authority consulted the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) G4 guidelines in the production of this report. The index lists the economic, environmental and social criteria that the GRI guidelines suggest, as well as certain specific criteria from the GRI Airport Operators Sector Supplement. The report was developed in accordance with the GRI G4’s “Core” standards.
