Animal fats, woody biomass, or other bio-based feedstocks…who imagined ingredients we use to cook or start a campfire could be used to fuel an airplane? And, this is not just any fuel, it is Sustainable Aviation Fuel or SAF, and SAN received its first delivery mid-October.

The SAN Arts Program at San Diego International Airport (SAN) incorporates three program components public art, temporary exhibitions, and the performing arts. SAN’s public art is a collection of permanent artwork that can be viewed in and around the airport campus while the temporary exhibitions and performing arts programing rotate to feature local, national, and international artists.

Passengers could hear drilling and buzzing at SAN’s Terminal 2 these last few weeks, as artists from SAN’s Make Yourself at Home de-installed their art exhibits. Make Yourself at Home was part of the SAN Arts Program's temporary exhibitions program that showcases the work of local San Diego and regional artists around a central theme in spaces throughout the airport.

If you’ve been by gates 46 through 51, you’ll notice something new. Two biometric face-scanning pods have been placed at each gate as part of Customs & Border Protection’s (CBP) biometric screening process for outbound passengers.

Some of those jobs include positions with the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority (Airport Authority), which owns and operates SAN, but most of the jobs are through the airport’s concessionaire partners. Airport concessionaires make up the various food and beverage, gift and news, relaxation, and lounge options inside the airport.

In case you haven’t heard, parking at the airport is extremely limited now that the Terminal 1 parking lot is closed. We understand this is not ideal, but please know that construction is moving a long and we will have a new parking structure in front of Terminal 1 by 2024 which will provide thousands of new on-site parking for passengers.

Construction is progressing daily on our New Terminal 1. Big trucks and backhoes move dirt and rocks around as construction crews and a dog build the terminal. Yes, you read that right. A dog! And it’s not just any dog. This is a very special dog with an important job.

4/25/2022  It’s Least Terns Season at SAN!

April through September is the least tern nesting season at SAN. Since 1970, this endangered migratory sea bird has found a suitable nesting site each year in the sand and gravel located in four oval areas between the runway and airplane taxiway.

We’ll be at Spanish Landing from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. helping prevent litter and pollution from entering our waterways.

4/13/2022  Traffic Impacts at Terminal 1 on April 14

Allow Plenty of Time for Picking Up and Dropping Off Passnegers

On Thursday, April 14, 2022, from midnight to 4 p.m., two lanes will be closed on Airport Terminal Road at the San Diego International Airport Terminal 1. Two lanes at Terminal 1 and one loading lane will remain open for traveler pick-up and drop-off throughout the construction activities timeframe.

San Diego International Airport (SAN) is in the middle of bustling downtown San Diego. So it’s no surprise that due to its location, many residential, office buildings, schools, and community use buildings are within a few miles of the airport. If you’ve ever walked around downtown or enjoyed the open shopping and amenities at Liberty Station, you know airplanes fly overhead quite often on the way to SAN. These moments often call for a pause in conversation until the noise has passed…we locals call it the “Point Loma Pause.”
