SAN Test Pilot Takes Flight

SAN Brews Beer With Help of Ballast Point & Water Works Inc.

San Diego International Airport (SAN) has teamed up with Ballast Point Brewery and Water Works Inc. to brew a beer we’re calling “SAN Test Pilot.” The delightfully light and crisp beer, which debuted in December 2019, is made with purified air-conditioner condensate water collected through the airport’s water reuse program. SAN Test Pilot is a blend of two beer styles– Kӧlsh (hailing from Cologne, Germany) and Dortmunder Export – which created a beer that was light and crisp with fruity esters similar to ripe pear and a sharp citrus zest finish. The new brew was on tap at San Diego Ballast Point locations in Little Italy and Miramar as well as Home Brew Mart during December but supplies went fast. We intend to produce more beer soon—as early as February 2020.

So what makes this beer special?

It’s made with water collected off air conditioning systems at 18 of our jet bridges. The water was collected, purified through ozone disinfection, and turned into delicious (if we do say so ourselves) beer.  This is all part of our efforts to reatively reuse our onsite water sources.

And what makes our water stewardship extra special?

Our condensate collection program, which began in 2014, now collects over 100,000 gallons of water per year! In an effort to reduce our potable water consumption and to support our overall sustainability initiatives, he water is reused instead of being sent down the drain. Typically, the water is used to wash equipment, cool the terminal’s HVAC system, or wash sidewalks. However, because condensate water has very little mineral content, it is actually an ideal base for brewers. That’s good news for beer lovers and even better news for planet earth!
