It’s been nearly six weeks since Atif Saeed arrived at San Diego International Airport as the new President & CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.
During this time, Saeed has focused on learning how the organization works, understanding its culture, and getting to know the people who make it successful. All of this, before making changes.
“To assume I know all the answers specific to SAN walking through the door on Day One would be very presumptuous,” he said. “Every airport is different.”
Listening, Learning and Building Trust
“It’s important to get to know our employees, our Board, our airline partners, elected leaders, the business and tourism community, and the region we serve,” he said. “Relationships matter. Trust takes time to build.”
His calendar has reflected that priority. In addition to a steady stream of internal meetings, Saeed has spent time with community organizations such as the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, San Diego Tourism Authority and Downtown San Diego Partnership.
Inside the organization, he has attended division meetings, smaller team meetings, and makes a point to stop by work areas simply to introduce himself and say hello.
A Marathon, Not a Sprint
For Saeed, thoughtful leadership is the key.
“This is a complex organization,” he said. “My commitment is to a marathon, not a sprint. We want to take the time up front to make sure we do things the right way.”
He understands that leadership transitions can create uncertainty.
“I want people to know there may be changes over time, but they will be thoughtful changes made with transparency and collaboration,” he said. “The goal is never change for its own sake.”
Impressed by the Team
Asked what has surprised him most during his first month, Saeed answered quickly: the people.
“The quality and engagement of our employees has been outstanding,” he said. “I’ve been consistently impressed by the professionalism, the pride people take in their work, and their positive attitude.”
He pointed to the recent federal government shutdown impacts, when long security lines created challenges for travelers.
“That was a difficult situation, but what stood out to me was how many Airport Authority employees volunteered to help passengers,” he said. “They stepped in to assist with queue management, answer questions and support the traveling public. That tells you a lot about the culture here. It’s a strong, agile, high-performing team.”
Discovering San Diego
Having previously worked on the East Coast, including at Philadelphia International Airport, Saeed says he has noticed San Diego’s distinct personality.
“There’s a laid-back quality here — but in the best possible way,” he said. “People are responsible, professional and grounded. But they are also approachable, friendly and easy to talk to.”
Looking Ahead
Six weeks in, Saeed is still in listening mode — but with a clear sense of purpose.
His early impressions of the airport and the region are marked by optimism, gratitude and respect for the team already in place.
“There is a high level of professionalism and polish here,” he said, “which is good because we have a lot to do.”
Moving forward, priorities for Saeed include:
• Optimizing operational, commercial and financial practices
• Data-driven decision making
• Enhancements to the customer experience
• Effectively telling the airport’s story, both internally and externally
• Continuing to grow international air service
There will also be a focus on continuing infrastructure improvements, including finishing Phase 1B of the New T1 project and connecting terminals 1 and 2.
“I think there’s real opportunity here,” Saeed said. “I’m excited about what we can accomplish together.”
