SAN DIEGO – March 19, 2015 – The celebration continues for San Diego International Airport’s Concession Development Program (CDP). This month marked the completion of the concession transformation that increased the number of shops and restaurants from 55 to 84, but praise is also in order for the recent win of five awards at the annual Airport Revenue News (ARN) Awards.
At the largest gathering of airport decision makers and concession executives throughout the year, the ARN Awards recognized the achievements of the many exceptional airports and companies driving innovation within airport concessions. In the medium-sized airports (5–10 million enplanements) category, San Diego International Airport was honored with the following awards:
- Best Overall Concessions Program
- Airport with the Best Concessions Program Design
- Airport with the Best Concessions Management Team
- Airport with Best Amenities
- Airport with the Best Customer Service
“We continuously strive to improve the customer experience, so in tandem with the completion of the two-and-a-half-year effort to enhance shopping and dining opportunities at the airport, it’s an honor to see our efforts recognized within the industry,” said Thella F. Bowens, President/CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.
In addition to completely revamping the shopping and dining options at the airport, one of the goals of the new program was to create a sense of place that was uniquely “San Diego” by incorporating more local San Diego flavor. As a result, travelers are now able to enjoy a number of local restaurants and shops, including Phil’s BBQ, Saffron, Warwick’s of La Jolla, Jack in the Box and Jer’s Chocolates.
The CDP also contributed to San Diego’s economic growth by creating more jobs for local workers. The number of concessions employees at the airport nearly doubled, increasing from about 625 to approximately 1,200.
