SAN DIEGO – July 23, 2014 – The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, owner and operator of San Diego International Airport (SAN), has launched its third comprehensive sustainability report, covering Fiscal Year 2013 (July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013) and based on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines (https://www.globalreporting.org).
GRI is an internationally recognized reporting framework for sustainability-related performance. In 2012, SAN became the first U.S. airport to publish a GRI-based annual sustainability report. In addition to traditional environmental metrics, the report covers financial and social sustainability efforts under way at the Airport Authority, including community involvement, sustainable business practices, financial performance, customer service initiatives and more.
“Our third annual Sustainability Report exemplifies the airport’s continued commitment to sustainable practices in all we do,” said Thella F. Bowens, President/CEO of the Airport Authority. “With numerous sustainability ‘firsts’, San Diego International Airport has proven to be a leader in this area – not just locally, but regionally, nationally and globally.”
In 2008, SAN was the first major airport in the nation to adopt a formal sustainability policy, pledging to be a role model for sustainability in the industry. In February 2014, it became the first U.S. airport to sign the Climate Declaration, a call to action that urges federal and state policymakers to seize the economic opportunity of addressing climate change.
Earlier this year, SAN was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification for The Green Build expansion at Terminal 2 from the U.S. Green Building Council, making SAN home to the first LEED Platinum-certified commercial airport terminal in the world. LEED certification is considered the industry standard in defining and measuring “green,” sustainable construction.
