Airport Authority Names New General Counsel

Tuesday, June 7, 2016

SAN DIEGO – June 7, 2016 – Amy Gonzalez has been named General Counsel of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.

Gonzalez previously served as Senior Director of the General Counsel's office. She takes over for Bret Lobner, the Airport Authority’s first chief legal advisor, who retired last week.

“Providing advice and counsel in the ever-changing airport industry is a challenge I wholeheartedly embrace,” Gonzalez said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve this dynamic organization in a new and expanded role.”

The Airport Authority Board selects the General Counsel, and the position reports directly to the Board. Board Chair Robert Gleason said he expects the transition from Lobner to Gonzalez to be seamless, and he thanked Lobner for his years of service.

“I believe one of the greatest measures of success is one’s ability to lead a solid team and simultaneously cultivate a path for your successor, which is what Bret Lobner has so skillfully and gracefully done,” Gleason said. “Being a fabulous mentor to our next General Counsel, Amy Gonzalez, is such an important part of his contribution to the Airport Authority.”

Airport Authority President/CEO Thella F. Bowens said Gonzalez’ breadth and depth of experience in the aviation industry will serve the organization well as it moves forward with several critical projects, including the new Terminal Two parking plaza, which is scheduled to break ground this summer; and the Airport Development Plan, which envisions the replacement of the aging Terminal One.

“We are fortunate to have Amy, whose experience and sound legal judgment will allow her to hit the ground running as our new General Counsel,” Bowens said.

Gonzalez has represented the Airport Authority since October 2003. Prior to that, she served as a Deputy City Attorney representing Los Angeles World Airports, the City of Los Angeles department that owns and operates Los Angeles International Airport, LA/Ontario International Airport and Van Nuys Airport.

Gonzalez began her career as a prosecutor for the City of Los Angeles and then represented the Los Angeles Police Department in civil rights cases. Gonzalez was also assigned as special counsel representing the people of the State of California against the five largest tobacco companies in a multi-district litigation.

Gonzalez also serves as an adjunct professor at Cal Western School of Law.
