With the first 19-gate phase of the new Terminal 1 complete, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority has launched the next phase of construction, which will include 11 additional gates, new customer lounges, a children’s play area and more dining and shopping options.
The completion of Terminal 1’s Phase 1B in 2028 will mark an exciting milestone in the ongoing transformation of San Diego International Airport, bringing travelers a more seamless, comfortable, and connected experience than ever before.
Phase 1B represents more than just new gates and amenities—it’s a major step toward building a smarter, more connected airport experience. With enhanced capacity, and upgraded passenger spaces, the airport will be better equipped than ever to welcome the travelers of tomorrow.

11 Additional Gates
Phase 1B adds 11 new gates, significantly expanding our airport’s ability to provide a better terminal experience to our travelers. This means greater flexibility for airlines and smoother travel for passengers.

Saying Goodbye to the Original Terminal 1
As part of this modernization, the original Terminal 1 has been permanently closed and is in the process of being demolished.
Traveling Between Terminals During Continued Construction
During construction, the roadway between Terminals 1 and 2 will be closed to all traffic. Your best bet for moving between the terminals is our Inter-Terminal Shuttle, which operates daily from 4 a.m. to 2 a.m.,
