$15.3 Million Will Help Make Hundreds of San Diego Homes Quieter

Living near a busy airport comes with plenty of benefits, but aircraft noise can be a challenge for some of our neighbors. Now, a new $15.3 million federal grant will help the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority make hundreds of homes around San Diego International Airport (SAN) quieter and more comfortable.
The funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will support sound insulation improvements for approximately 400 eligible residences through SAN’s Quieter Home Program.
The program has been working with residents in communities surrounding the airport since 2001. Over the past 25 years, it has completed sound insulation improvements in 6,238 homes, helping residents enjoy a quieter indoor environment while continuing to live near a thriving airport.
So, what does the program actually do?
It starts with an evaluation of each eligible home to determine which improvements can make the biggest difference. Depending on the home, upgrades may include noise-mitigating windows and exterior doors, ventilation systems such as air conditioning, weather stripping, and caulking around openings.
The goal is to reduce aircraft noise inside eligible homes by at least five decibels. Improvements can also provide better ventilation and help make homes more comfortable overall.
The FAA determines which homes are eligible based on their location and interior noise levels. Eligible residences are within the FAA’s 65-decibel or greater contour around SAN and have average interior noise levels of at least 45 decibels with the windows closed. Eligible communities include Loma Portal, Ocean Beach, Bankers Hill, Middletown, Golden Hill, and South Park.
This latest federal investment will allow the Quieter Home Program to continue its work with our neighboring communities and help hundreds more San Diego households enjoy a quieter place to call home.
