Southwest Airlines Inaugurates Nonstop Service to Hawaii

Next Stop Honolulu

It’s been a little over a year since Southwest Airlines announced they would offer nonstop service to Hawaii from San Diego International Airport (SAN). The service, which was originally slated to begin in April 2020, was postponed because of…you guessed it…COVID-19. Hawaii implemented travel restrictions in March which hindered leisure travel to the islands due to a mandatory 14-day quarantine period. In October, the travel restrictions were updated to allow passengers to bypass the 14-day quarantine period by providing a negative COVID-19 test by a Hawaii trusted testing and travel partner, submitting the Mandatory State of Hawaii Travel and Health Form, and having a temperature screen conducted upon arrival.

Shortly after these updated travel restrictions were implemented, we got word from Southwest that Hawaii service would finally happen. Aloha! So today, November 4, the inaugural flight from SAN was sent off to Honolulu with passengers ready to experience the island vibe. Inaugural passengers were treated to a celebration by Southwest that included music, hula dancers, festive decorations, and small gifts placed in each person’s seat. The festivities were conducted per County and State guidelines which included social distancing and masks.

All of us at SAN are happy that Southwest is providing another option for our community to visit Hawaii. We know the route will be popular as both cities have a military presence, and with that a desire to visit friends and family. Mahalo Southwest, your dedication to San Diego and your continued partnership is appreciated.
