About the Artist
Description
Taylor Chapin, an artist and North County San Diego native, earned her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and MFA from the University of California, San Diego. Her vivid and color-saturated paintings draw inspiration from advertisements and social media posts. Starting with photographs of models, Chapin digitally manipulates her subjects before recreating them in oil paint on canvas. Like an optical illusion with multiple interpretations, her work challenges viewers to consider whether the figures depict a single character in motion or fragments of identity kept out of public view. By freezing ordinary, fleeting moments and gestures, she invites viewers to reflect on the lasting impressions we leave as we go through the motions of everyday life. Through her richly patterned imagery and interpretive process, Chapin critiques how we curate our virtual selves for social influence, reminding us that, unlike digital representations, public actions cannot be easily edited.
