Natalie Gonzalez is a mixed-media installation artist based in San Diego’s Golden Hill neighborhood. Originally from Mexico, Gonzalez studied cultural affairs at Universidad de Guadalajara. Her work is deeply influenced by the Huichol tradition of creating Tsikuri or “God’s Eyes”—woven, geometric designs on a wooden cross believed to offer spiritual protection and a connection to the divine. Gonzalez reinterprets these two-dimensional weaving techniques into a dynamic, three-dimensional arrangement of diamonds, forming a unified blue wave that evokes images of San Diego’s ocean and beaches. Her work emphasizes spatial rhythms and geometries, transforming them into a tactile, immersive experience. As she weaves, the color segments of each diamond shift slightly apart, creating a sense of levitation and movement. Homenaje a San Diego bridges sacred indigenous imagery, regional materials, and minimalism, resulting in a fluid installation that changes depending on the viewer’s physical engagement with the artwork.
