May-ling Martinez, a resident of San Diego’s East Village neighborhood, is a mixed-media artist born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, who earned an MFA from San Diego State University. Martinez sees herself as an editor of found objects, bringing together materials that inspire viewers to imagine possible connections. In Totems / Markers, she plays with materiality, forming sculptures from dozens of pieces of eyewear sourced from local secondhand shops. The included paraphernalia represents prominent San Diego pastimes or industries, such as swimming, healthcare, and safety. Arranging them into totemic forms, Martinez transforms these ordinary objects into something sacred and healing. The textures and colors of various plastics are accentuated by illuminating these works from behind. By repurposing everyday materials, Martinez underscores the unique, reflective qualities of these objects, which are readily available in Southern California. Through this connection to the region’s distinct material culture, she offers a contemporary exploration of how local resources shape artistic expression.
