Leila Khalilzadeh Aghdami is a mixed-media artist originally from Iran, now based in San Diego. Aghdami studied graphic design in Tehran before earning an MFA from San Diego State University. In her latest series, Reflective Curiosities, she revisits the colors and materials that brought her joy in childhood. Aghdami masterfully captures the light, colors, and textures of iridescent cellophane in oil paint. This installation offers viewers an opportunity to engage with the materiality of the shimmering, light-reflecting film itself. The artist presents canvases wrapped in this iridescent material alongside oil paintings based on the same subject. Through this pairing, she invites audiences to experience both her subjective interpretation of light and reflection, as well as the chance to form their own connection with how light interacts with physical elements such as hue and shape. The reflective quality of the material also allows viewers to see themselves mirrored in the work, deepening their engagement with the piece.
