Kaori Fukuyama is a Japanese-born multi-disciplinary artist and educator based in San Diego. She has exhibited throughout the country and was a recipient of the 2020 San Diego Art Prize. Fukuyama is known for her sculptures and installations that explore the relationship between color, light, and form, using materials that reflect, refract, bend, and absorb light. In Tip of the Iceberg, Fukuyama arranges multiple acrylic triangular prisms to form an upside-down iceberg suspended from the ceiling. From a distance, the structure appears to shimmer like a jewel, captivating attention with its beauty. However, upon closer inspection, the hollowed form creates the sense of melting glaciers and rising sea levels—symbolizing the intensifying environmental threats we face. This sculpture challenges viewers to confront the urgent reality of climate change and reflect on their individual responsibility in addressing it.
