About the Artist
Description
Jason Sherry is a San Diego native and multidisciplinary visual artist who earned his BA from San Diego State University. Sherry has an interest in collecting cultural artifacts from secondhand stores and flea markets and reinterpreting these materials in his contemporary art creations. In this series, Sherry employs stereo photography—images captured from slightly different angles to mimic human vision. He photographs significant cultural landmarks, often from Southern California, and reconfigures them into auto-stereoscopic displays inside tennis rackets. Sherry arranges his photos so that, as viewers move from side to side, the images take on a three-dimensional or lenticular quality. Some of the glowing, backlit pieces are displayed as diptychs, pairing contrasting yet connected images, such as dinosaur teeth with those of a whale. This arrangement references the back-and-forth of a tennis court, inviting viewers to shift their position and experience a dynamic interplay of motion and perception.
