About the Artist

Description

Guillermo Arias is an internationally acclaimed Tijuana, Mexico-based photographer, known for documenting powerful border stories since 1993, when he began his career as a freelance photojournalist. Arias is a frequent contributor to the global news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP) and a two-time recipient of Mexico’s prestigious Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte grant. In Border Mirrored, Arias captures an iconic view of the US/Mexico border. At the beach, the border extends from land into the ocean, merging with the natural landscape. The image evokes a moment of innocence and joy, as the border is interrupted by a young girl absorbed in play, unaware of the wall’s distorted reflection beneath her. Through this personal interpretation of light and space within the border region, Arias reflects on how everyday structures reshape our surroundings, creating opportunities for both experience and contemplation.
