Alex Cerutti earned his BFA from CalArts in Los Angeles, where a childhood fascination with street art helped shape his bold, vibrant style. Drawing inspiration from Southern California murals, Cerutti uses geometric patterns and repetition to create optical illusions that appear to evolve and expand. Like other forms of urban art, his work on the airport’s public piano highlights his use of non-traditional canvases. Piano blends the energetic colors of street art with meticulous craftsmanship, creating a striking visual impact. Cerutti’s bright color palette and intricate patterns create a sense of visual glow and vibration, making the piece feel as though it’s pulsating. By playing with principles of perception, the work encourages viewers to consider the dynamic qualities of shape and movement. This experience is further enhanced by the opportunity to interact with the piece by playing the piano.
