Our New Terminal 2 Parking Plaza

Thursday, December 6, 2018

Have you had a chance to park at SAN's new Terminal 2 Parking Plaza yet? It opened in May 2018—ahead of schedule and under budget, and offers convenient, close-in parking for our customers!

We are proud of our new Parking Plaza for quite a few reasons. It was designed to provide a fast, safe, and convenient traveler experience, with easy vehicle circulation and state-of-the-art parking guidance systems that direct customers quickly to the nearest available open space. The 1 million square foot, three-story Parking Plaza features 2,900 spaces - increasing parking capacity in front of the terminal by nearly 1,700 spaces.

The project embraces innovative technologies and sustainability in its design and implementation. Motorists can reserve parking spaces in advance and find available parking spaces more easily with a guided light system. Additionally, the structure utilizes extensive natural lighting, energy-efficient fixtures, and a stormwater capture and re-use system. The project also includes 16 electric vehicle (EV) charging ports as well as 145 ‘EV-ready' parking stalls, allowing the airport to quickly add additional chargers as customer demand for electric vehicles grows in the future.

In fall 2018, the Terminal 2 Parking Plaza was awarded Envision ‘Gold' certification by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. The Envision rating system, created in partnership with the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Public Works Association, recognizes infrastructure projects that incorporate sustainable best practices into their design, construction, and operations.

But wait, there's more! Previously, the project has received recognition from:

Parksmart: The Terminal 2 Parking Plaza achieved Parksmart Gold Certification. Parksmart is the world's only rating system designed to advance sustainable mobility through smarter parking structure design and operation. Parksmart offers a roadmap for new and existing parking facilities to use innovative, solutions-oriented strategies. Points are awarded to parking structures for forward-thinking and sustainable practices in three categories: management, programs, and technology design.

Merit CODAaward: SAN won an international design award for a unique piece of public art in the Terminal 2 Parking Plaza. Formation, created by artist Mark Reigelman, received Merit honors in the Transportation category for the sixth annual CODAawards: Collaboration of Design + Art. SAN is one of only two airports worldwide to be named to the CODAawards winners list this year.

Industrial Environmental Association (IEA): SAN received IEA's 2017 Environmental Excellence Award for the structure's stormwater capture and reuse system. The Parking Plaza captures 100 percent of the rain that falls on the 7.6-acre structure, routing it into a below-ground storage system with a capacity of nearly 100,000 gallons. Instead of becoming storm water runoff, potentially impacting San Diego Bay, the collected rainwater will be used by the adjacent Central Utility Plant to help heat and cool the terminals.
