Sophia Allison is a mixed-media visual artist who studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning her MFA before relocating to Los Angeles. She recently completed a residency at the Camera Obscura Art Lab in Santa Monica, California. Allison’s installation spans two series: abstract, geometric forms reminiscent of landscapes and naturalistic sculptures inspired by geodes and crystals. She crafts pieces using both watercolor and handmade paper that she makes from the pulp of recycled materials. Additionally, she incorporates elements such as dirt, salts, and colorful pigment to enhance the materiality of her creations. At first glance, her rock-like sculptures appear solid and weighty, but closer inspection reveals their light, delicate construction. This shift in perception mirrors the dichotomies central to her artwork: natural forms that are entirely man-made, and seemingly permanent objects that are surprisingly ephemeral. Her works invite viewers to explore perspective dynamically, challenging assumptions with each closer look.
