About the Artist
Description
Wendell Kling is an artist and professor at San Diego Mesa College whose interdisciplinary work blends traditional sculpture with emerging media and technologies. His background in performing arts production and interest in communal spaces shape his work, which often takes the form of environmental installations with playful activations. In A Coruscating Sanctuary, Kling transforms airport hold gates into a colorful contemplative space. The installation features LED-backlit paintings layered with vinyl inspired by cut paper art. The work draws on world folk traditions and celebratory holiday decorations from the border region, while also evoking the luminous sacred stained-glass windows from religious settings. In this way, Kling invites viewers to reconsider the role of the airport as more than a transient space, offering moments for reflection and meaning.
