About the Artist
Description
Christian Michaels is a mixed-media visual artist based in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood. Michaels began his artistic journey as a photographer, exploring the interplay of light, and over time, has expanded this exploration by incorporating materials like reflective aluminum disks and LED lettering into his work. His current site-specific installation builds on this light-driven practice, using multi-colored LEDs to cast dynamic shadows. Michaels’ work simulates interchange, the constant flow of non-verbal communication and movement in a travel environment, presenting a parade of familiar silhouettes in the form of figures or hand gestures. As the light converges with suspended cutouts, vibrant shadows made by intersecting LEDs emerge, and viewers’ own shadows become integral to the piece as they pass by. The installation invites viewers to step into the work, becoming part of the environment and joining with the interconnected nature of their surroundings.
