More Frequent Route 992 Service Makes Getting to SAN Easier

Ground Transportation

Getting to and from San Diego International Airport (SAN) is about to get a little easier, whether you’re catching an early flight, arriving late at night, or heading to work at SAN.

Beginning Sept. 6, MTS Route 992 will provide service every 15 minutes until the end of service, giving travelers and airport employees a more frequent and convenient connection between Downtown San Diego and SAN.

The enhanced schedule also adds more evening and late-night trips, making Route 992 a better option for passengers arriving on later flights and employees who work outside traditional business hours.

For travelers, taking the 992 can mean one less thing to worry about on travel day. Instead of driving through traffic or searching for a parking space, riders can relax and let someone else handle the trip to the airport. The route connects Downtown San Diego directly with SAN, making it a convenient option for both departing and arriving passengers.

For the thousands of people who work at SAN, more frequent service and expanded hours can make the daily commute easier, particularly for employees who start early or finish late.

And more people are already choosing transit for their airport trips. Route 992 ridership has grown from nearly 166,000 passenger trips in 2021 to nearly 399,000 in 2026, an increase of more than 140%.

Route 992 is one of several transit options available to SAN passengers and employees. Travelers can also take the free, all-electric San Diego Flyer between SAN and the Old Town Transit Center, where they can connect with the MTS Trolley and buses, NCTD’s COASTER, and Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner.

With more frequent service and additional evening and late-night trips, getting to SAN without a car is becoming an even more convenient choice.
