Volunteer Opportunities at SAN

For many visitors to the region, San Diego International Airport is the gateway to “America’s Finest City.” The Airport Volunteer program is an opportunity to welcome guests and provide customer service to the traveling public in a friendly and helpful manner.

Airport Volunteers

Volunteer Airport Ambassadors are the best source of information at the airport. Ambassadors staff information desks, operate courtesy golf carts, staff podiums, and are also mobile throughout the airport and available to assist passengers and guests with their questions and wayfinding needs.

Become an Airport Volunteer

Volunteer Airport Ambassadors are encouraged to commit at least 12 hours per month. Applicants should be tech-savvy and eager to learn in SAN’s dynamic airport environment. Training sessions highlight the many volunteer opportunities available.

Ambassadors staff information centers, roam terminals with mobile assistance, and drive a courtesy cart in Terminal 2. With access to computers, phones, and reference materials, they help serve over 22 million travelers a year. Every shift brings new questions—and interesting people!

Airport Volunteers Therapy Dog Teams

Therapy dog teams roam gate areas, comforting passengers and sharing airport info. Their friendly presence is a beloved part of the Volunteer Airport Ambassador program.

Teams must be registered with a recognized therapy dog organization and have prior experience. Volunteers complete training, shadow an active team, and do a walkthrough to ensure a good fit. Handlers must pass a background check and get badged.

Each shift, dog teams are paired with an Ambassador for support and safety. We ask for a commitment of 2–3 two-hour shifts per month. Uniforms and scheduling are covered in training.
