Biking/Walking
With its setting along the shore of San Diego Bay and near downtown San Diego, San
Diego International Airport is easier to reach via bicycling or walking than you
might think. For those with very light luggage and others wishing to bicycle or
walk to or from the airport, here is some useful information.
TERMINAL MAPS
For your convenience, here are the maps of the terminals at San Diego International Airport
BICYCLING
Getting to the Airport
- A shared-use path for bicyclists and pedestrians – separated from vehicular
traffic – connects the airport to Little Italy and downtown San Diego to the
east, and to Liberty Station and Point Loma to the west.
- The scenic path runs along the San Diego Bay waterfront on one side and North
Harbor Drive on the other, with a portion passing through Spanish Landing Park.
- The San Diego Regional Bike Map can help you plan a convenient bicycle route to
or from the airport. In addition, Google
Maps features the ability to suggest bicycle routes to and from the airport.
- Crosswalks with traffic signals allow cyclists and pedestrians to safely cross
North Harbor Drive to reach the airport and its adjacent parking lots on the
other side. Signaled crosswalks are located at the following intersections on
North Harbor Drive:
- Rent A Car Access Road
- Harbor Island Drive
- Terminal 2 Road
- McCain Road
- Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) buses and trolleys and North County Transit
District (NCTD) buses and the Coaster are all equipped with on-board bicycle
racks to accommodate commuters with bicycles.
At the Airport
- Once at the airport, cyclists should exercise caution travelling along the
airport roadways in front of the terminals. • Bicycles should be walked when on
airport sidewalks.
- Bicycle Lockers:
- Bicycle lockers (holding four bikes each) have been installed by the San
Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) at San Diego International Airport.
- The lockers are FREE to use, but there is a $25.00 refundable key deposit, paid
to SANDAG’s iCommute program, required to use them. In order to use these
lockers, and other SANDAG bicycle lockers in the San Diego region, sign up here
- Lockers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Current bicycle
locker locations at the airport are:
- East of the Terminal 1 pedestrian bridge, along the fenceline (4 bikes)
- Bicycle racks:
- In addition, bicycle racks at the airport are located at the following locations
- Commuter Terminal Parking Lot 1 (east side)
- Directly Below the Terminal 1 Pedestrian Bridge
- Additional bike storage is planned for the Terminal 2 area once The Green Build
construction is completed in 2013.
