Get ready for an improved airport! Beginning in March, travelers to/from San Diego International Airport will notice construction activity in front of Terminal 2 related to The Green Build, the largest project in the airport’s history.

The Green Build will bring a number of long-awaited upgrades for passengers traveling in and out of San Diego International Airport, including 10 new jet gates, additional shopping and dining options and a dual-level roadway to separate arriving and departing passengers and reduce curb-front congestion.

To accommodate construction activity on the dual-level roadway, some parking in front of Terminal 2 will be temporarily relocated and the pedestrian bridges will be removed. Frequent shuttles will transport travelers from relocated parking areas to the terminals.

All travelers – whether visiting San Diego County on vacation, traveling on business or headed out of town on holiday – will reap the benefits of these improvements. Travelers can expect to take advantage of the finished facilities in 2013.

Highlights of The Green Build include:

  • 10 new jet gates
  • A dual-level roadway at Terminal 2, featuring an arrivals curb on level one and a departures curb on level two to relieve current curbside congestion
  • Additional parking for remain-over-night aircraft to eliminate the need for aircraft to taxi across the runway
  • Taxiway improvements to enhance the flow of aircraft traffic
  • New, expanded dining and shopping options
  • More comfortable holding areas at the gates
  • More and improved security checkpoints

In addition, the project will pursue Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification. Goals of the project’s sustainable design include:

  • Decreased water usage
  • Reduced energy consumption
  • Use of alternative energy sources

Construction will proceed over a three-year period – at its peak, the project is expected to create more than 1,000 constructed-related jobs. Travelers can expect to take advantage of the finished product in early 2013.

Improvements will enhance the flow of passengers, enabling them to move more quickly through security checkpoints, as well as provide facilities and services to make passenger travel more comfortable and convenient.
