In July 2009, Mayor Jerry Sanders joined the Airport Authority and more than
200
community members at a ceremonial groundbreaking for the largest project in San DiegoInternational Airport’s history. Called The
Green Build, the project includes much-needed improvements to meet current
and future airport demand. Golden shovels in hand, Mayor Sanders, Airport
Authority Board members and Airport Authority President & CEO Thella Bowens
turned symbolic shovelfuls of dirt and gathered to celebrate the kick-off to
construction on this long-awaited project.

Highlights of The Green Build include:
- 10 new jet gates
- A dual-level roadway
at Terminal 2, featuring an arrivals curb on level one and a departures curb on
level two to relieve current curbside congestion
- Additional parking for remain-over-night aircraft to eliminate
the need for aircraft to taxi across the runway
- Taxiway improvements
to enhance the flow of aircraft traffic
- New, expanded dining and shopping options
- More comfortable holding areas at the gates
- More and improved security checkpoints

In addition, the project will pursue Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) silver certification. Goals of the project’s sustainable design
include:
- Decreased water usage
- Reduced energy consumption
- Use of alternative energy sources
Construction will proceed over a three-year period – at its peak, the project is
expected to create more than 1,000 constructed-related jobs. Travelers can
expect to take advantage of the finished product in early 2013.
Improvements will enhance the flow of passengers, enabling them
to move more quickly through security checkpoints, as well as provide facilities
and services to make passenger travel more comfortable and convenient.
