SAN Sponsors Creek to Bay

Each year, San Diego International Airport (SAN) partners with I Love a Clean San Diego (ILACSD) to support their education and cleanup efforts in the region. With the current COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Creek to Bay cleanup event had to change formats. We went from hosting a cleanup site near the airport in a large group, to conducting individual household cleanups all across the County.

On Saturday, June 20th more than 800 San Diegans cleaned up their neighborhood streets, parks, beaches, and trails while maintaining social distancing requirements and using their own supplies. We’re proud of our employees who spent part of their weekend cleaning up their neighborhood and preventing the pollution of San Diego’s beautiful natural spaces. People picked up everything from cigarette butts to snack wrappers and an encyclopedia printed in 1959. They then shared their participation and results through social media.

One of our Environmental Specialists, Katie Altobello, spoke with I Love A Clean San Diego about her cleanup and the Airport’s 15th year sponsoring Creek to Bay. Check out the video!

The event came at an uncertain and anxious time. With the country struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic and a nationwide movement pushing for racial and social justice, the cleanup event afforded an opportunity for people to come together (separately) and enact positive change. Volunteers picked up over 7,000 pounds of debris from the San Diego region during the event!

Because we love where we live, and because we believe in protecting our environment for years to come, the Airport Authority is committed to sustainability and programs that reduce our environmental impact.
