Kiewit/Sundt Joint Venture

The Kiewit/Sundt Joint Venture (KS) is in the beginning stages of design for the Green Build Program, specifically the Landside Improvements of Terminal 2 at the San Diego International Airport. The design effort is led by URS Corporation. The project is targeting a LEED Silver Certification from the United States Green Building Council.

The major elements of construction are comprised of the following: roadway improvements, second level departure roadway with passenger processing facilities (Smart Curb), temporary build out of Gate 19 - to be used as a temporary USO facility, reconfiguration of transit center, reconfiguration of surface parking lot, a new building to house the USO and Parking Management Offices, and Pedestrian bridges to connect the Smart Curb pavilions to Terminal 2.

The project is being developed using a progressive design-build delivery method enabling close collaboration between the Airport Authority and the Joint Venture. One major focus is to maximize opportunity for local contractors and vendors wherever possible and to make this landmark project truly a community effort.

The progressive design-build approach allows construction to start while the specialized design is still underway. Bid packages will be staggered as the design advances, with construction packages bidding into 2011. Initial construction started in the last quarter of 2009 with the build out of Gate 19 providing temporary USO facilities for our troops.

The project team looks forward to the participation of the local subcontractor and supplier community throughout the course of the project. We are committed to maximizing opportunities for the smaller local firms. To meet this goal, we will be packaging work into smaller scopes (where appropriate). In this spirit, major trade contractors are strongly encouraged to provide every opportunity for local, small and disadvantaged firms to participate in their bid. The Green Build Program is a landmark project for San Diego, built for and by the local community!
