The Green Build
Contract 1
|
Updated Feburary 9, 2010
|
The Turner/PCL/Flatiron Joint Venture has begun the process of designing and building
a $470,000,000 expansion of Terminal 2 at the San Diego International Airport.
The scope of work includes construction of a three-story, ten gate expansion of
Terminal 2 consisting of a ticket lobby, airline check in, security screening, baggage
handling, seating areas, concessions and support space. Also included is approximately
1,500,000 sq. ft. of new taxiway and Jet parking. The project is targeting a LEED
Silver Certification from the United States Green Building Council upon completion
in late 2012. The lead designer under the Joint Venture is HNTB with local Architect
Tucker Sadler and Associates providing key support.
The project will be developed using a Progressive Design Build delivery method enabling
close collaboration between the Airport Authority and the Joint Venture. A major
focus is to involve local contractors and vendors wherever possible to make this
landmark project truly a community effort.
The Progressive Design Build Approach allows construction to start even while the
highly specialized design is still in progress. Bid packages for the Terminal and
the Airside will be staggered as the design advances, with Terminal construction
packages bidding through mid 2011. Initial construction work on the Taxiway
and Project Management Office is scheduled to start in the late 3rd quarter of 2009,
and construction of the Terminal is scheduled to begin by late Summer 2010.
The Project Team looks forward to the participation of the local subcontractor and
supplier community throughout the course of the project. By packaging the
work into smaller scopes where appropriate, opportunities will be provided for smaller
local firms that might otherwise be excluded from a project of this magnitude. In
this spirit it will be strongly recommended that all major Trade Contractors provide
every opportunity for Small and Disadvantaged firms to participate in this process.
This will be a landmark project for San Diego, built for and by the local community!
