Airport Site Selection Program
The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority has worked since its inception to identify and assess sites for a potential new regional airport to meet increased demand now and accommodate expansion in the coming decades as the San Diego region continues to grow. On November 7, 2006 the Airport Authority reached a huge milestone with the state mandated county-wide vote on the Airport Site Selection ballot initiative. The Airport Authority remains committed to keeping the public informed about the region’s needs and progress in addressing this important transportation infrastructure issue.
In response to the defeat of Proposition A, the county-wide ballot measure proposing that the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority work with elected officials on pursuing a new airport, the Authority’s Chairman Joe W. Craver, issued the following statement.
"By conducting the most comprehensive airport study ever in this region, and subsequently placing Proposition A on the ballot, the Authority has fulfilled one of its most important responsibilities as set forth by state legislation.
"The final decision had to be left to the voters and they have made that decision. Their message is clear – in a time of national conflict, people do not want to do anything that will affect military readiness.
"While we completed the site selection effort begun in 2001, the Authority has also been working on the first phase of the master plan for SDIA at Lindbergh Field. Subsequent phases of that master plan will allow us to maximize Lindbergh Field to realize its fullest potential for the next 15 to 20 years.
"The Authority is also committed to completing our work as the County’s Airport Land Use Commission by updating land-use-compatibility plans for all 16 of the County’s airports."
