Honor Flight WWII veterans return to spectacular welcome

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

San Diego – April 30, 2014 – At 2:55 PM on Sunday, May 4, 80 WWII veterans will return to San Diego on a chartered US Airways flight after visiting the WWII Memorial. The veterans will be wowed by the airport reception, including music of the 40’s and active duty military in uniform joining crowds of sign and flag-waving friends and family. Professional dancers will entertain those waiting with swing dancing to songs of the 40’s.

Two veteran husband and wife couples will be making the trip together; a daughter and a grandson will serve as guardians for one of the couples. Another veteran is one of the Tuskegee Airmen – who went on to lead the Air Force department that investigated UFO’s. Most of the veterans are over 90 years old; one veteran is 99! Two Girl Scout Cadettes have collected more than 500 cards and letters that will be distributed during “mail call” on the plane and many more Scouts will be at the airport for the festivities.

Media may film family and friends as they welcome the veterans home. No RSVP is necessary. Media wishing to film the vehicle salute for the inbound plane should arrive by 2:15 PM, obtain a gate pass from the US Airways ticket counter and proceed through security to Gate 49. All others should proceed to the Terminal 2 baggage claim area near carousel 8.

Live media vans may park in the new media parking spaces at the west end of Terminal 2 on a first-come, first-served basis. All other media may park in the Terminal 2 parking lot.

The veterans will leave Friday morning. They spend all day Saturday traveling by motor coach to see the WWII Memorial followed by the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery. They also tour the Korean, Iwo Jima, Vietnam, and Air Force Memorials, and the Navy Yard Museum.
