Environmental Affairs

It is the goal of the Airport Authority to plan, design and operate San Diego International Airport in a manner that shows the utmost respect for our unique natural setting – an urban center on the shore of San Diego Bay. The Airport Authority strives to protect the wide variety of natural resources that exist at this location. Every aspect of the existing and future activities at the Airport are designed to protect these natural resources, as well as the health and well-being of the traveling public that pass through our facility, and surrounding neighborhoods and communities, and the people that work at the Airport.

Mission Statement

To lead the airport industry in the development and implementation of comprehensive programs and practices designed to minimize the airport's environmental footprint and to ensure a safe operating environment throughout the airport and the surrounding communities.

Key Responsibilities

The department's key responsibilities are to plan for and promote sustainable airport development; ensure compliance with all environmental laws and regulations; responsibly manage environmental issues pertaining to the airport's operations and its potential impacts to surrounding areas; protect and promote the natural resources within the Airport Authority's jurisdiction; and disseminate public information.

Department Functions

The Environmental Affairs Department manages all environmental-related programs, including airport planning and environmental review, regulatory compliance, water and air quality, site remediation, hazardous material handling and natural resources protection. The department interfaces with other Airport Authority departments to assess potential environmental impacts of all proposed projects. The department is also responsible for long-range airport facility planning, including the San Diego International Airport Master Plan.
